Lake Kerkini Bird Reserve Adventures

Lake Kerkini Bird Reserve is an artificial reservoir and protected wetland located in the Serres regional unit of Central Macedonia, Greece. Originally created in the early 1930s and expanded in the 1980s, Lake Kerkini functions not only as a critical water resource for the region's agriculture but also as one of the most important habitats for birds in Europe. Covering approximately 120 square kilometers, the reserve features a mosaic of open water, reed beds, marshes, and surrounding wetlands. This diverse landscape sustains over 300 species of birds, including rare and endangered species such as the Dalmatian pelican, pygmy cormorant, and the imperial eagle.

The area attracts both resident birds and large numbers of migratory species during spring and autumn, making it a hotspot for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Apart from birds, the reserve supports various fish species, amphibians, and mammals including otters. Visitors have access to several observation platforms and trails that provide excellent views and photographic opportunities, particularly around the lake’s shorelines and reed beds.

Lake Kerkini’s history as a managed wetland has contributed to its role in wildlife conservation and local eco-tourism, with educational programs and guided tours available seasonally. Its rich biodiversity, combined with relatively easy accessibility from nearby cities, makes it a top destination for ecotourism in Greece. Additionally, the surrounding landscape includes gentle hills and agricultural land, offering scenic drives and local cultural experiences. The reserve is part of the Natura 2000 network, reflecting its international importance for migratory bird protection.
